For most people this is a totally different way of being with our emotions. The more typical response is aversion and avoidance. We don’t like the way we feel and we want to get rid of these negative emotions. the trouble with this approach is that it simply does not work! The more you avoid or suppress your feelings the more they persist and the more you fight and resist your emotions the stronger they become. The biggest problem we have to deal with is this reactivity to our negative and painful emotions. The reactivity is habitual and built on unawareness and blindness. The first rule that we teach in Mindfulness Counseling is that Reactivity inhibits change; Reactivity inhibits healing; Reactivity inhibits transformation.
Mindfulness is an awareness skill that is the exact opposite of reactivity: Mindfulness is defined as non-reactive awareness. When we bring this conscious and non-reactive awareness to our anxiety, depression, anger, self-hate or other emotions then, and only then, these emotions begin to heal. Mindfulness facilitates change; Mindfulness allows healing; Mindfulness stimulates transformation.

This is because all of these emotional problems are based on chronic underlying psychological emotional habits that tend to operate out of awareness like any habit, and they tend to get triggered and then we become captured by that habit. It triggers an internal psychological habit that then creates the emotion.
Working with these habits is the main focus of Mindfulness Therapy. You will learn very practical and very focused methods of working with your emotions using mindfulness during the therapy sessions and also you will be able to practice these methods by yourself between the therapy sessions.
Most people using this very focused approach typically can expect to see significant reduction in anxiety or depression within 3-4 sessions. We spend much more time working on changing that underlying habit than simply talking about your family history or the reasons that may have caused you to become anxious or depressed in the first place. The history of your emotional suffering is useful, of course, but it is not going to change that emotional habit. You have to focus on that directly, which is what we do in Mindfulness Therapy.

If you’re interested in Skype counseling then chances are you have already tried conventional talk therapy or counseling and you may have already tried medications and not gotten the results that you are expecting or hoping for. The mindfulness approach is quite different in many ways. It is very, very practical, for one thing, and it’s also really focused on helping you manage your emotions and managing your thoughts. The biggest problem that really lies behind anxiety and depression and other emotional problems is that we become totally lost in the mind. We become identified with thoughts, we become identified with our emotions, we become identified with our memories, and we become identified with our beliefs. This leads to a kind of conditioned reactive type state in which we find ourselves victims of habitual conditioned reactions.
So when a thought arises in the minds it triggers anxiety and that anxiety triggers more thoughts or rumination which in turn feeds the anxiety leading to more thoughts which feeds the anxiety even more, and in this way we get stuck, essentially, in a recurring cycle of habitual reactive thinking. Mindfulness is really one of the best ways of breaking out of this cycle of habitual reactive thinking. We learn how to essentially change our relationship to our thoughts in our mind.
We learn to sit with our thoughts, to sit with our emotions, and cultivate what is called “independence”, that is we’re able to sit and watch a thought, but without becoming identified with it and without feeding the reactivity. The same with emotions: we learn to focus mindfulness on our emotions so that we can develop independence and balance in relationship to those emotions, and in this way we stop feeding the reactive thinking that feeds that emotion. So, through mindfulness therapy training you will learn exactly how to do this.
And from my experience this is perhaps the most effective way of dealing with anxiety and depression and the compulsive impulses behind an addiction or OCD or most common psychological problems that cause emotional suffering.
