Emotional Imagery - Change it and you change your emotions
Changing the structure of emotions is quite interesting, because this is based on what we call the Structural Theory of Emotions, that is a central part of Mindfulness Therapy as I teach it. whereby we find out that emotions are primarily based on imagery. An emotion is the product of internal psychological imagery that we create and that we become habitually identified with.
The most common example would be traumatic imagery for people suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). There they tend to have very vivid internal psychological imagery, and when that imagery gets triggered then they will have an equally intense emotional reaction.
Sometime this internal imagery is like a memory image in which the traumatic scene is replayed in the mind. More often it is more of an abstract image that has certain characteristics that make the emotion appear. For example, the most common characteristic of intense emotional imagery is its size and its position. If the emotional imagery is very large then the chances are that it is going to be very overwhelming; the emotional reaction will be very intense.
Mindfulness Therapy is all about exploring the details of how emotions work. We actually focus mindfulness, which is a form of direct conscious awareness, onto the emotion. We learn to meditate on the emotion in order to see more of the details of its imagery, because the more you learn about the structure of the emotional imagery, the more you are able to change that imagery and make it smaller, for example. When you change the emotional imagery you will change the intensity of the emotion.

This is because all of these emotional problems are based on chronic underlying psychological emotional habits that tend to operate out of awareness like any habit, and they tend to get triggered and then we become captured by that habit. So, for example, anxiety is primarily a habit. Anxiety can be triggered by a thought or a memory or something that someone says to you, or other event. It triggers an internal psychological habit that then creates the emotion.
Working with these habits is the main focus of Mindfulness Therapy. You will learn very practical and very focused methods of working with your emotions using mindfulness during the therapy sessions and also you will be able to practice these methods by yourself between the therapy sessions.
Most people using this very focused approach typically can expect to see significant reduction in anxiety or depression within 3-4 sessions. We spend much more time working on changing that underlying habit than simply talking about your family history or the reasons that may have caused you to become anxious or depressed in the first place. The history of your emotional suffering is useful, of course, but it is not going to change that emotional habit. You have to focus on that directly, which is what we do in Mindfulness Therapy.

Mindfulness Therapy is quite an effective way of working with depression, anxiety or addictions. Essentially, it's a way of shifting those habitual thought patterns that endure your stress or depression, and defusing the emotion underneath the reactive thinking that fuels that believing.

So, this is a system that is very successful, in action, especially for working with stress and for conquering depression, plus it is an excellent means of neutralizing those compulsive impulses that we experience in dependence and other kinds of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, or OCD.
