Then those habitual emotional reactions just run our life and we feel a victim. The whole focus of mindfulness therapy is to learn to see these habitual reactions and through seeing them you begin to break free from their grip. Then you begin to work on the underlying emotional energy that fuels that habitual emotional reaction. When you begin to neutralize this emotional energy that fuels the habit, then the habit cannot sustain itself and it just changes.

My skills is in the area of Mindfulness Therapy, which is a system that I developed many years ago now and that I talk about in my book, ‘The Path of Mindfulness Meditation’ and the whole focus of Mindfulness Therapy is to teach you effective ways of working with your emotions so that you break out of that cycle of becoming a victim of your emotions.
We learn how to change our relationship to our emotions entirely. We begin to see our emotions as not defining our identity, but simply as components of our identity, parts of our character. These are content of our minds, but they are not the defining characteristic of our mind.
To put it simply, it is incorrect to say “I am anxious”; it is more correct to say, “I notice anxiety within me.” It is to change our identification with the emotion. This is the most important thing that we learn during mindfulness meditation and mindfulness therapy. We learn to become the Observer, and the better you become at becoming the Observer, the more the anxiety or depression will change and heal.
There is a direct relationship between your ability to take on the identity of Observer and the ability of your emotions to heal and change. The real problem for most people is that they are not able to observe their emotions. They simply become overwhelmed by them, they become lost in them and they become lost in habitual patterns of reactivity to their emotions.
All forms of reactivity, whether is is identification with the emotion or reaction to the emotion have the same effect, and that is to prevent change and to prevent healing.
So, in Mindfulness Therapy we learn how to overcome this habit of reactivity so that we create the right internal conditions in which emotions will change and heal.
Mindfulness Therapy is very focused and very direct, and most people experience significant changes after relatively few sessions simply because it gets right down to the underlying process that continually generates anxiety or depression.

This teaches the mind a totally different way of processing that experience, and this way of being with the emotion without reacting allows the emotion to resolve.

More than this, Mindfulness Therapy also allows you to explore how emotional reactions work, themselves. Now, emotions are really quite different than thoughts, their primary language is not words but it is imagery. Imagery is the natural language of emotions. When we say, for example, “I feel overwhelmed,'” that give us a clue to the internal imagery of the emotion. We literally see the emotion above us, at a higher position, weighing down on us. We feel OVER-whelmed by the emotion. That is a part of the imagery that makes the emotion work.
So, when we explore this imagery with Mindfulness Therapy, we see all the details of how that emotional imagery works and we can change that emotional imagery through mindfulness. We can explore making all kinds of modifications in that internal imagery that allows the emotions to neutralize itself, to discharge itself, to change. We teach the emotion how to change itself, essentially.
Emotional imagery, just like reactive thinking is primarily habit, and habit thrives on not being seen. Mindfulness is all about exploring in great detail what is actually happening; it’s about exploring that structure. It is about learning how to become a scientist, basically, exploring how things work in your mind.
So, this is one reason why Mindfulness Therapy is so powerful. Another reason why Mindfulness Therapy works is because it teaches you how to change your whole relationship to your thoughts and emotions. It teaches you how to observe your emotions without becoming overwhelmed by them, without becoming identified with them, without becoming reactive.

So, in Mindfulness Therapy, the whole approach is to learn how to, essentially, sit with your emotions without becoming overwhelmed by them. How, to sit with anxiety, stress or anger and make friends with them rather than push them away or avoid them, which is, of course, our habit. Most emotional reactions are, themselves, just habits, and what makes a habit strong, what make it persist, is, primarily, unawareness. If you don’t see the habit, the emotional reactive habit, then it just continues to operate subconsciously and it just ruins our life, it runs our life for us.
So, the first part of Online Therapy that I teach in these online chat sessions is about awakening to your emotional habits. The more you see them, the less power they have, the more choice you have. This is a very important and central principle of Mindfulness Therapy. But, the next part of Mindfulness Therapy goes well beyond that. And that is that it teaches you how to work with those emotions in a positive way that leads to their healing and their transformation, and this can only happen when you establish a conscious, aware relationship with your emotions, painful as they may be. You have to learn to make friends with them if they are to change. If you resist them, they will not change; if you avoid them, they will not change. But, if you actually make friends with them, and I’m talking about making friends with anger, with negative thoughts, with pain, with guilt, with traumatic memories…When you can learn to do that, then they truly start to change. So, this is a little bit about Mindfulness Therapy.

We don’t always have to resort to using medications to treat anxiety or depression; there are alternatives, and talking to a therapist online provides one of these alternatives. At the end of the day, medications can only go so far in helping relieve symptoms of anxiety or depression. But medications will not change the underlying process that causes anxiety and depression. That process is primarily psychological in nature. It is due to the way that you see emotions internally; it’s due to the internal imagery of the emotions that causes them to have power over you.
If you want to change anxiety and depression you MUST look at this underlying process and examine the underlying imagery that creates the anxiety or depression.
On example of this imagery that I am referring to is very common with people who are suffering from a phobia, for example. If you have a phobia of a spider then very clearly it’s not the external image of the spider that you see through your eyes that causes the panic anxiety, but the internal image that the mind creates when it sees that spider.
The nature of this imagery is almost certainly going to be very large, very vivid in color and probably very close, and it’s those features of the internal imagery that actually create the anxiety.
During online therapy sessions we will explore the internal imagery of your emotions and we will change that imagery through creative imagination.
The imagery simply arises out of habit, but habits can be changed. When you bring conscious awareness to examine that imagery, that brings with it some choice, and that allows you to change the imagery of your emotions. When you change that imagery the emotions change. It’s really as simple as that.

The style of therapy that I offer is called Mindfulness Therapy, which is a very exciting, very unique, alternative approach to the more traditional talk therapies that you’re probably familiar with. The whole focus of Mindfulness Therapy is to help you establish the right kind of relationship with your emotions so that you don’t become overwhelmed by them. Once you establish a Mindfulness relationship with your emotions, then it’s possible to start to look at the structure of those emotions and find out how they
work. This often involves imagery.
For example, when a person feels overwhelmed by an emotion, right there, we have a clue in that language as to how they see that emotion internally. If they say, “I feel overwhelmed. It’s getting on top of me,” chances are they literally see that emotion inside as being above them, at a higher position to them. They see themselves as a small person with this looming emotion above them. Seeing this kind of structure really is very, very helpful because when you see it, then you can begin to change it. Once you change the structure of the emotion, the emotion itself changes.
