Although the term “nervous breakdown” is not used by most professionals, it is certainly a term that most of us relate to. Generally, a nervous breakdown can be defined as an acute episode of severe anxiety and depression that results from a recent significant life transition event, such as the death of a loved one or the loss of a dear friend. At least 24% of psychological breakdowns are caused by a breakdown in a long-standing relationship or marriage. Another big cause is loss of stature, position at work or income.
A common factor is a sudden change in one’s role and perception of self. Actors and other celebrities are particularly vulnerable to nervous breakdowns because they can rise to such an unrealistic position of importance and remain at that level for years before the inevitable fall. Styles come and go and public opinions and needs are very fickle. It is extremely difficult for a celebrity to readjust to a position as a “normal” person” and many just cannot adjust. Not surprisingly, alcoholism and drug addiction can be very prevalent among those “at the top.”
But, even for ordinary people, the shock of a divorce, of being a single woman again after years assuming the role of a mother and wife can be just as hard to accept. The loss of identity and meaning can lead to profound depression.
Rediscovering your identity after a crisis
Whatever the specific set of circumstances that led to the nervous breakdown, to the addictions, depression and fear that may have followed, it is possible to rediscover yourself. You may have to do a lot of profound soul-searching, but many people actually emerge from this journey stronger and with a much stronger sense of self. It is not unusual to experience a spiritual rebirth during this transition phase.
