Online Therapist Dr. Peter Strong provides Online Mindfulness Therapy for Anxiety, Depression & Stress via Skype

Let me help you overcome your emotional suffering using the gentle yet extraordinarily powerful approach called Mindfulness Therapy.

Online Therapy has become a very popular choice for many people. Convenience has to be one of the main reasons why people seek therapy online. Many professional people do not have the time to leave work to drive to a therapis's office. Mothers with young children find it inconvenient to leave home and would rather not have to hire child care. The elderly or those with a disability find it difficult to leave home. Whatever the reason, convenience is an important factor for successful therapy.

There are also many people who would like the help of a therapist, but find the whole experience of going to a therapis't office to be far too intimidating. If you are suffering from social anxiety, shyness or general anxiety and tend to become easily overwhelmed, then being able to get the help you need from an Online Therapist is a very attractive option.

If you are suffering from agoraphobia, the online option may be the best choice available for you because the challenge of leaving the security of your home is just too great. Working with  therapist online can give you the help you need to overcome your anxiety.

Yet another reason why people turn to the internet for psychological help is that people want more choice in finding the right therapist to work with. What is available locally may not meet your needs, or you may prefer not to work with someone in your local community. Many of the clients who come to me for online therapy live in rural locations in the US, and some live or abroad and do not have access to a local therapist.

But, one of the favorite reasons why people come to me for therapy, is that many people are searching for a better alternative to traditional talking therapy. In fact, most of my clients have already tried this route and feel that the traditional approach simply does not help them change the underlying problem. Talking about our problems is important, but it is not always enough to resolve the underlying anxiety, panic attacks, depression or other emotional suffering.

Online Therapist via Skype

I have developed a system called Mindfulness Therapy, a system that I devised in the 1980s that is really effective for anxiety and other forms of emotional stress. This system of therapy is desigened to teach you how to change the underlying emotions that create stress, anxiety and depression. Skype sessions are a combination of teaching and practical work - all designed to give you the skills you need to change your habitual patterns of emotional reactivity -  all designed to stop you from being a victim of your painful emotions, so that you can heal and move on.

How Does Online Therapy Work?

When you schedule a session you will be able to talk to a professional therapist via Skype and have a face-to-face session just as if you were in the therapist's office, but with the added advantage that you never have to leave home.

The sessions that I offer are a combination of teaching and practical experiential exercises designed to help you work in a more positive way with your emotions, in a way that promotes change and healing. Sessions are typically 90min in length, which is much longer than traditional talking therapy sessions, and this allows us sufficient time for both teaching an practical work. Typically, you will want to schedule one session per week, which will give you enough time to practice what you learn in each session before the following session. In this way, each online session builds on the previous session and after 4-6 sessions you will have developed very effective skills for healing your anxiety or managing your stress.

Is Seeing a Therapist Online as Effective as Traditional Therapy?

Although Online Therapy is relatively new, there are a number of reasearch studies looking into the effectiveness of the online approach relative to traditional in-person therapy sessions. Most of these studies have been quite positive showing that online counseling is equally effective to in-person psychotherapy. In fact, the results are so promising that many Mental Health Authorities are now recommending and promoting online therapy. Online Talk Therapy is likely to become the first choice for many people in the future.

In one much cited study published in the Lancet, a British medical journal, reserach psychologists found that online psychotherapy "more than doubled the chance of recovery."

The researchers noted that "Clients feel less intimidated, non-embarrased and uninhibited while taking online therapy."

The author concluded, " the NHS, the UK's publicly funded health service, should endorse an online approach to therapy as an extremely beneficial alternative for the treatment of depression." Providing access to Online Therapists is also being developed in Australia and other countries with a large rural population who do not have easy access to local therapists.

CNN ran an article on Online Therapy in 2009 that you might enjoy reading:

Online Therapy: Good as face to face therapy.

What is Online Mindfulness Therapy?

My focus is to teach you how to overcome your habitual negative patterns of thinking and emotional reactions by developing mindful awareness. If you want to heal your anxiety or depression you MUST learn how to relate to the underlying emotions without becoming reactive towards them, which is our usual resonse. Reactivity simply keeps everything locked in place and actually prevents transformation and healing.

We learn how to hold our pain, our anxiety, our anger or any other emotion in our awareness without reacting and without becoming overwhelmed by them. This is called the Mindfulness-Based Relationship, and this is central to all successful psychotherapy.

What is the difference between Online Therapy and Online Counseling?

There is not much difference in practice, except that an Online Counselor will tend to focus more on the teaching side of psychotherapy, whereas an Online Therapist focuses more on the transformational process itself. An Online Therapist helps you release the inner emotional tension that has become stuck, wheras an Online Counselor will try to help you look at your problems in a different way, from a different and more positive perspective. Both approaches are required, because transformation depends on the depth of understanding you have about your inner beliefs and patterns of negative habitual thinking as well as how to create the right inner conditions that allow painful emotions to heal.

Can an Online Therapist Help Me with My Anxiety?

Feeling comfortable and uninhibited is obviously very beneficial when working with anxiety and this is one reason why Online Therapy works so well for General Anxiety, Social Anxiety, Panic Attack Anxiety and Depression-Anxiety. Mindfulness Therapy is recognized as one of the most effective treatments for anxiety disorders because it combines Cognitive Therapy with the powerful awareness skills of compassionate mindfulness.
